Clear results usually land the same day. A possible hit is checked with the county or state source within 72 hours, and anything that is someone else’s or not reportable is removed.

Cost · screening the whole roster
By the National Employment Law Project’s estimate, about two-thirds of U.S. adults have no arrest or conviction record. So most reports you order will be clean, and the per-report price is what decides whether every new hire or new gig worker gets screened, or only some of them.
When each check costs $30, teams start deciding who is “worth” screening, and the people they skip are the risk. At $5, the answer is simply everyone.

The bulk of the list is re-pulled on a 30-day schedule. When public records feed an employment decision, FCRA § 1681k requires them to be complete and current, and a fixed schedule is how we hold to that.

Where any database search stops
Counties decide what gets reported upward
There is no master federal file of every conviction in the country. Whether a county court sends its dispositions to a state repository is often up to that county, and every vendor running a multi-jurisdiction search inherits the same gaps, PreHireBadge included. Searching more named sources shrinks the odds of a miss without eliminating them. If a role needs certainty for one county, a clerk-of-court search there is the tool for it, at a much higher price.
Registry data ages fastest
A new sex-offender registration does not show up anywhere until the next pull. That is why 189 of the 200registries we search, covering each state, D.C., the territories, and the national site, are pulled weekly instead of monthly. If your drivers, cleaners, or caregivers go inside customers’ homes, a month-old copy is a real exposure. Across the full list, 222 sources run weekly and 92.2% run monthly.
Fair objections, straight answers
- A list of names proves nothing.
- Agreed, so test it on people you already know about. Send invites to five past hires your current vendor has screened (they consent, like every candidate does), then put the two reports and the two invoices side by side. The whole experiment is $25.
- How is $5 not a stripped-down search?
- Most of a typical screening price is margin stacked by resellers and sales teams. ScreenForge Labs is the consumer reporting agency itself, PreHireBadge sells self-serve, and nobody is paying for a subscription tier. The search is not what got cut.
- Who decides a record belongs to my candidate?
- Nothing is reported on a name match alone. Clear results usually come back the same day; a possible record is checked against the county or state source within 72 hours, and anything that is not this person or not reportable for employment is dropped. A check that cannot be verified is refunded.
Missing a court you rely on, or spotted a number that looks off? Email support@prehirebadge.com. You will hear back from a person, even when the reply is “we don’t search that one.”
